Doug Eberhardt

Doug has been involved in basketball as a player, coach, administrator and entrepreneur for the past 33 years.  As a player, Doug was All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-Canadian at Mount Royal College in Calgary (playing for Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame member, Jack Kenyon).  Doug then came back to Vancouver to play the point for the UBC Thunderbirds.  He still toils in a variety of local men’s leagues and claims to still have both unlimited range and a sweet game (although nagging injuries are taking much longer to heal).

Doug continues to appear on Canada's longest running sports radio show "Sportstalk with Dan Russell" as the show's NBA analyst and show contributor.  "In the Paint," an around the league segment, features everything from interviews to analysis and is heard every Friday on CKNW 980am throughout the NBA season, right through to the draft in June. You can also read all of Doug's Sportstalk musings (including his 2006 Worm of the Week picks) right here on ebehoops.com.  As well, Doug's regular NBA reports can be heard streaming & archived on CKNW 980am at www.cknw.com

Doug recently finished his second season as head coach of his alma mater, Magee Secondary in Vancouver.  After acting as head coach during the 2003-04 season and taking a withering Lions program and returning them to respectability, Doug was back as the head man for the 2005 - 2006 season. His goal, helping to reestablish the basketball program at Magee. The Flyin' Lions ended up having a dream season, finishing 22-13 and qualifying for the BC high school boys championships. The Lions went 2-2 at the tourney, losing out to the eventual champions from Handsworth (North Vancouver). Lions senior, Hunter Jordan, played up to his potential and grabbed a third team all-star for the tournament. For the year; 2nd place in their division, 3rd place at the Vancouver's, 5th place at the Lower Mainland's and a berth into the BC tournament. Nice.

As head coach in 2003-2004, the team played exceptionally well for Doug, returning to both the Vancouver and Lower Mainland championships for the third straight year and finishing with a 16-14 record.

During the 2004-05 season, Doug signed on as both an executive and coach with the expansion Calgary Drillers of the American Basketball Association.  After putting together and running the team's free agent camps, Doug slid into the role of director of marketing and communications. Later in the season, Doug was scheduled to head back into the role of assistant coach.  Unfortunately, the mighty Calgary Drillers hit an empty well financially and it was back on the road to Vancouver. The Drillers ceased operation after an abbreviated 16 game schedule.

One of Doug's most recent accomplishments was putting together the "Junior Grizzlies" youth basketball program for Basketball BC and the Vancouver Grizzlies (now know as the Steve Nash Youth Basketball League).  He is extremely proud of this program and both his work and commitment to encouraging young people to become involved with basketball.

Paul Eberhardt

Paul, Doug's younger brother (although few believe this documented fact), is in his 26th year of coaching. Paul brings an outstanding amount of technical knowledge and a positive attitude to coaching at all levels of basketball.  Paul has been the Head Coach at Magee Secondary (Vancouver), Burnett Secondary (Richmond), McNair Secondary (Richmond) and he is presently the very successful Head Men's Coach at Capilano College in North Vancouver and Palmer Secondary in Richmond.

Paul recently finished his 7th year at the helm of the Capilano College Blues men's basketball team with a 3rd place finish in the BC college tournament.  The season ended just shy of a trip to the national tournament as the Blues suffered a semi-final loss to Fraser Valley.  Paul is eagerly looking forward to the 2006-2007 season and the potential for more success at Cap.

Paul's McNair high school teams became an annual visitor to the BC Championships, where his teams made 8 appearances at the BC High School Championships during his 15 year high school coaching career.

As well, Paul is the new coach of the BC Under 17 "Red" team. Made up of the top cuts from the U17 team and the top 16 year olds in the province, the team will play in the Big Time tourney down in Las Vegas.  Paul has also been the two-time head coach of the BC Under 17 Select team that represents the province in competitions across Canada and the United States.  His overall record with BC team's against Canadian competition is an amazing 31 - 3 (with two heartbreaking losses to Alberta in 1999).

Know for his flamboyant style, Paul is an outstanding motivator of young players who truly gives back to the game that he loves.  When not devoting all his waking hours to basketball, Paul can usually be found at a poker table… somewhere.  Paul played in the "Main Event" at the 1999 and 2006 World Series of Poker at Binion’s Horseshoe in Las Vegas.  Rumor has it that he was often mistaken for that well-known "Rounder" Matt Damon (more likely, people might have thought he was Gabe Kaplan).
